History

"High Mowing was a home before it was a school -- and becoming a school, it still stayed a home."
~ Beulah Emmet, Founder of High Mowing School

High Mowing School is the oldest Waldorf high school in North America and the only one to offer a boarding program. In 1942, Mrs. Beulah Emmet, inspired by the work and thought of Rudolf Steiner, converted her family country home into a Waldorf high school. The old and charming hilltop farm ideally suited the warm, home-like atmosphere she sought for her students, and it even suggested the school's name (mowing is an old New England term for "hayfield").

For more than 65 years, High Mowing has offered teenagers the unique combination of Waldorf education and community living. In more recent years, the school has formed a partnership with Pine Hill, an elementary Waldorf school across the road, to offer a complete pre-K through 12 Waldorf education in Wilton, New Hampshire.
