Faculty Profiles
Teachers at High Mowing are practitioners of the art of education. They take nothing for granted, are open to new possibilities and are ready to meet the students in front of them. In addition to a variety of educational backgrounds, nearly all have been involved in Waldorf Teacher Education and many have taught in other Waldorf Schools as well as public and other independent schools.
Some members of the faculty and staff have been around for awhile -- Mrs. Karl began teaching here in 1950! -- others have joined just recently (Jonathan Northrop graduated from High Mowing in 1993 and just returned this year as a dorm counselor!).
The faculty and staff come to the school with a wide range of life experiences including volunteering in the peace corps, backpacking around the world for eight years, and serving in the military. Before coming to High Mowing, members of the faculty and staff have had careers in banking, engineering, writing, law, nursing, scientific labs, theatre, cooking, major corporations, and farming, to mention a few. Some are still practicing artists, writers, musicians, and entrepreneurs.
All of the adults on campus are an intrinsic part of the High Mowing community, thus involved in the education of its students. Students are surrounded by adults who care, love being around teenagers, are interesting and interested, and fun. Many live on, or very near campus, and are readily available, indeed welcome the opportunity, to help students with questions about homework or anything else that may come up.
Many families of faculty and staff share in the life of the school which contributes to the exceptionally warm and homelike atmosphere that is welcoming to all who arrive on campus.
