Performing Arts
Like all subjects offered at High Mowing, the performing arts belong to the curriculum not simply as a skills program but also as a way of assisting the harmonious development of the whole student.
Our lives are filled with the music of rehearsals and performances by the chorus, jazz group, chamber ensembles, and individuals. There is room for aspiring professional musicians and those who want to learn to play an instrument or to take voice lessons.
There is widespread enthusiasm for drama, too, with half-a-dozen productions each year, including an all-school performance of Shakespeare or a musical such as Oliver! or Pirates of Penzance. Student and faculty-written plays and skits also find their way onto our stage.
Special mention should be made of eurythmy. Found only in Waldorf schools, eurythmy gives visible expression through movement to the inner formative quality of speech and to tone and intervals in music. Though a discipline stemming from fundamental laws of gesture and movement, it nevertheless allows the artist wide latitude of freedom in choreography and individual style.
