Roger Bing, who has left his wife Barb for a young graduate student named Gail, finds his expectations of Gail resisted by her own intentions for her future.

A knock on the door, whom Roger expects to be Gail’s boyfriend Scott, reveals Barb with the separation papers ready for him to sign.

Roger’s crisis deepens as he sees all his hopes for the relationship with Gail shattered and at a second knock he picks a vase and rushes to the door in a fit of anger.
