The following workshops with Philip
Beaven are just some of those available. Any combination of different
parts can make an interesting and fulfilling week or weekend. He has
been teaching workshops to adults and teenagers all over Europe and
the US since 1991.
AWAKENING CREATIVITY THROUGH PLAY AND IMPROVISATION
(this course can be orientated to different groups - general public, performance students,
eurythmists etc.)
The aim of this course is to begin to put us in touch with the sources of our creativity
and fantasy through movement and theatre improvisation. Simple and enjoyable games are
used to build an atmosphere of warmth and mutual trust out of which play can begin. On
this foundation fantasy can take wing and we can begin to improvise together.
This course will be of interest to anyone interested in exploring creativity in a social
setting, no special skills are required. Those working in a social environment may find it
particularly inspiring.
"I have become more aware of many things since this workshop. Many
experiences were completely new to me. I realised that there truly are ways of awakening
one s sleeping creativity and I was suprised to discover such a rich potential and joy in
play within myself. As a whole this workshop with its emphasis on improvisation was a
confrontation with questions pertaining to self knowledge, social relationships and an
experience of one s physical body. I could never have imagined it would be so much
fun!"

Devising - Creating
a collaborative performance piece
Play and improvisation are about listening to one another,
discovering intuitively and spontaneously how to co-create and to liberate
the imagination. Playing and improvising are social processes where
the purpose of the game is not to win but to play and therefore enable
each others playing. We meet each other unmasked from our normal
social conventions. This can be the basis for the development of empowering
capacities for creative expression, for performance, and for life.
We will first learn how to play together, to develop a warmth for each
individuality, to trust. From this basis our playing together will develop
and stories arise. These stories we will weave into a collaborative
performance piece as the climax of our playing.
Towards this objective we will explore questions such as;
~ How can we build an ensemble through exercises that engage the body
and the voice?
~ How can we learn to look at the world through the eyes of a child
where everything - even the simplest object - becomes a world of discovery
and play?
~ How can we learn to get out of the way and allow a character
or quality to inform our movement and gesture?
This workshop is a lot of fun! Be prepared to laugh, and to discover
the excitement and empowerment of creating together.
NEUTRAL MASK
The neutral mask is a unique tool to that trains the body and perception,
freeing the imagination of the performer. It helps us to see how each
movement, each gesture
we make, speaks. It sets us on the road to that transformation of body that
can lead to it becoming an instrument for expression. Through movement improvisation
of qualities and
scenarios our movement vocabulary is enhanced and our self knowledge developed.
"The neutral mask, when placed on the face, should
enable one to experience the state of neutrality prior to an action, a state of
receptiveness to every thing around us, with no inner conflict." Jacques Lecoq
This workshop will be of value for anyone interested in the
expression possibilities of the human body and psyche.
EURYTHMY
Eurythmy is a distinctive language of movement/dance with its origins in the work of
Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). It has a unique potential as an artistic medium to bring a new
dimension to all performing arts. Classical and contemporary poetry, drama and music are
brought to expression through a dynamic interplay of the spoken word, live music, gesture
and colour.
As "music or poetry for the eyes" eurythmy can re-awaken our relationship to the
sounding arts: poetry, drama, storytelling, music. Language, the essence of communication,
becomes visible in movements that lie inherent in the sounds themselves.
This workshop can be given as a 2hr introduction, half day, whole day, full weekend or an
on going weekly course (depending on location).
HOW CAN WE MAKE A SINGLE BUILDING OUT OF MANY STONES?
Social games and exercises challenge us to see each other anew. They can help us to find a
common impulse and to develop a practise of healthy relationships. First we build focus
and trust. Learning the "playfulness" of a small child and developing this into
games can help us to discover the "life" in every situation and meeting. Then
through basic mask work (the neutral mask) and social improvisations we can face in a
gentle way some of the blocks that we all carry. This course is ideal for groups that have
a common purpose together (schools, curative homes etc). It can be particularly effective
at the beginning of a new year or before a new development.
