Mask/Puppetry/Object Theatre
12th January to 13th February 2009

The animation of objects enhances the possibilities we have to tell stories. A puppet can fly and do all sorts of things that humans can’t! A world of imagination opens up as the performer recedes and the object/puppet comes to life.

The mask was traditionally used to make the world of spirits visible. An actor with a mask was inhabited by a spirit being. Today the mask is a unique tool for the performer to hone and develop his skills. It quickly teaches us how the smallest movement can speak and how the whole body can tell a story.

This 5 week full time course will include puppet and/or mask making, operation and playing of different puppets/masks/objects, development of stories and collaborative creation.

The course can be taken as a single course or as a part of the “Art of Performance” year.

Supplementary courses with other tutors are still being arranged.

Course facilitator: Philip Beaven      Puppetry Course Tutor: Mark Pitman
